Cilaos

The small dynamic town of Cilaos is found at the foot of the Piton des Neiges (3070m) making it a perfect basecamp for those who wish to summit this peak - the highest point in the Indian Ocean. The town itself is one of the jewels of Creole gastronomy, found nestled in a caldera at an altitude of 1214m; vineyards and lentil crops are perched on every ledge and protrude from the steep surrounding slopes. A rich cultural and culinary hertitage is not all Cilaos has to offer, it is also the ideal place to practice a range of outdoor activities like canyoning, climbing and mountain biking. Le cirque de Cilaos was originally known as Tsilaosa, meaning 'country you do not leave', a name which we are sure you will agree, is perfectly suited.
